Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a comprehensive approach to managing artificial intelligence’s transformative potential on the economy during a speech in Sydney. The country will establish a new ‘Office of AI’ within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet to develop and coordinate AI standards across government.

Albanese noted that until now, responses to AI have been issue-by-issue and sector-by-sector. “This is our time to decide what AI looks like here in Australia. It is not a question of if or when AI will transform our economy, we are past that,” he said.

The Prime Minister stated that this approach is a world-first and will enhance Australia’s appeal as an AI investment destination by providing more clarity for approvals and streamlining compliance processes.

The most striking part of the announcement concerns new rules for data centers. Albanese announced clear rules for where large data centers can be built and the power and water they can use. Under the new legislation, data centers will be required to become net energy producers, and their water usage will be limited.

Legislation is expected to be introduced to Parliament early next year. Amanda McKenzie, CEO of the Climate Council, warned that the AI-driven surge in data centers will have a profound effect on the energy system, and unchecked growth could mean soaring energy prices and rampant climate pollution.

Australia currently does not have specific AI laws and instead relies on privacy, consumer protection laws, and a voluntary AI ethics framework. The new AI Office aims to bring more centralization and comprehensiveness to AI regulation in the country.
