Roblox announced a major innovation that simplifies mobile game development in the metaverse. The new feature called ‘Build’ allows users to design AI-powered games from their mobile devices.
The Build feature provides the following:
- Creating a basic game with a single text prompt without any programming experience
- For example, when you type ‘Let’s make a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest,’ AI creates the initial version of the game
- Ability to share and modify games with friends
- Powered by a broad set of AI models including various open-source and Roblox proprietary models
Roblox’s AI automatically handles gameplay mechanics, environment, characters, visual style, sound, and more.
AI-powered game generation has raised concerns among developers and players. Critics argue that reducing development barriers with text prompts could lead to an influx of low-quality and repetitive games. This year’s Game Developers Conference State of the Game Industry survey found that 52% of game industry professionals believe generative AI is having a negative impact on the industry.
To address these concerns, Roblox plans to rank AI-generated games based on player retention. If a game is not played, it will not be featured prominently.
The Build feature will enter public alpha testing in New Zealand on July 28 for users aged nine and older who have verified their age. Users aged 16 and up will have the opportunity to publish their creations to a global audience. A free basic version and paid options will be offered.
AI agents that assist creators in playtesting and providing analytics are also planned to roll out in the coming months.
